D-Day in the Cotentin

From Utah Beach to Sainte-Mère-Église

In the Manche, D-Day history is woven through the beaches, marshes, villages and roads of the Cotentin. American airborne troops landed inland before the seaborne assault on Utah Beach, while the campaign then pushed towards Carentan and the deep-water port of Cherbourg.

Utah Beach

The westernmost D-Day landing beach. American forces came ashore here on 6 June 1944 to establish a bridgehead in the Cotentin and support the advance towards Cherbourg.

Sainte-Mère-Église

American airborne troops of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions landed around the town during the night. Sainte-Mère-Église became one of the first towns liberated by airborne forces.

Sainte-Marie-du-Mont

Just inland from Utah Beach, this village sat between the landing zone and the airborne objectives and became an important point where troops moving off the beach linked with paratroopers.

Azeville Battery

A surviving German coastal battery north of Sainte-Mère-Église, now preserved as a reminder of the Atlantic Wall defences facing the invasion.

La Fière

The causeway and bridge at La Fière became the scene of intense fighting as American airborne troops sought to hold routes across the flooded marshland west of Sainte-Mère-Église.

Chef-du-Pont

Another strategically important crossing in the airborne sector, helping control movement across the Merderet valley during the first days of the invasion.

Carentan-les-Marais

Capturing Carentan was essential to link the Utah and Omaha beachheads. The town and surrounding marshes became a key battleground in the days after D-Day.

Cherbourg-en-Cotentin

The deep-water port of Cherbourg was a major Allied objective. Its capture later in June opened an important route for bringing men and supplies into the campaign.
